Russian prosecutor seeks six years jail for protest leader Navalny

Russian state prosecutors demanded a six-year jail sentence on Friday for protest leader Alexei Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin's biggest critics, on charges of theft.

Prosecutor Sergei Bogdanov did not ask for the maximum 10-year prison term at Navalny's trial in the industrial city of Kirov, but a six-year sentence would keep him in jail until after the next presidential election in 2018.

Navalny is accused of stealing 16 million roubles ($482,000) from a timber firm in Kirov that he was advising in 2009 while working for the liberal regional governor. He denies the charges and says they are intended to sideline him as a potential rival to Putin.
