Henry Kissinger says US-Russia deal on Syria pulled US out of difficult situation

Diplomatic elder statesmen Henry Kissinger alongside former US National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski told CNN's Fareed Zakaria on Sunday that Russia's major motivation in its Syria diplomacy was stability.

"The superpower deal on Syria aimed at allowing Russian President Vladimir Putin to fight the surge of radical Islamic power in the region and also within his nation's borders," both officials said, speaking on "Fareed Zakaria GPS" on CNN.

They added however that the US-Russia deal on Syria also managed to pull the United States out of a difficult situation.

For his part, Brzezinski said that "President Putin voices his concern that the Muslim population in Russia's Caucusus region 'might explode'".

Both officials also said that "the US policy on Syria was headed down the wrong path before the deal was brokered".

In turn, Kissinger said he thought the administration of US President Barack Obama had been focused too narrowly on efforts to drive Syrian President Bashar al-Assad out of power as opposed to "the historic conflict between Shiites and Sunnis".

Brzezinski was even harsher, noting that a potential attack on Syria would have been "pointless".
