Clinton meets opposition leader in Burma

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met for a private one-to-one dinner with Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday evening.

Suu Kyi was released last year after two decades of on-and-off imprisonment and has said she will run in upcoming elections.

Clinton and Suu Kyi met at the residence of the top US diplomat in Myanmar and were to see each other again more formally on  Friday.

Clinton's visit is the first trip to Myanmar by the top US diplomat in more than 50 years.

She said the US was ready to further improve relations with the civilian government in the Southeast Asian nation, also known as Burma, but only if it stayed on the path of democratization.
