Massive firework display lights up Burj Khalifa to celebrate New Year

A large firework display lit up on Tuesday night the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, as thousands of people ushered in the new year in the United Arab Emirates.       

People watched spell-bound as a dazzling array of pyrotechnics adorned the Dubai skyline.        

The fireworks display were choreographed specially to music composed by Dubai musicians.       

The annual display is one of the major attractions of Burj Khalifa and is one of the most watched events across the country.        

Known for glitz, glamour and over-the-top achievements, Dubai hoped to break another record by creating the largest fireworks show ever this year.        

Organisers said the display covered 30 miles (48 kilometres) of seafront.        

The six-minute extravaganza included 500,000 fireworks from 400 firing locations, all synchronised by 100 computers from stations across the city, organisers said.        

Guinness World Record officials were expected to measure the scale of the event.
