A huge superstorm is forming in the north Atlantic and is expected to lash Britain within 72 hours.

Horrific hurricane-force winds of up to 100mph will hit the coasts while devastating gales of 70mph are expected inland.

Over two inches of rain will pound flood-hit areas late on Friday before another storm smashes into Britain on Saturday.

“Yet another rapidly deepening area of low pressure will approach the southwest late on Friday," the Met Office’s chief meteorologist said in a statement.

“A further 20-30 mm of rain is expected within the warning area, while 40-50 mm is possible on high ground in the southwest".

“The people should be aware of disruption to travel from this heavy rainfall combined with the strong winds, especially in areas where flooding has recently took place.”

This comes as Western Power Distribution said up to 5,000 properties are still without power after 80mph winds led "airborne debris" to fly into overhead lines.

The Met Office also warned the weekend storm will constitute be a “major” event with current weather warnings likely to be upgraded to more severe level-2 amber alerts.

“A very low depression is coming from the Atlantic late on Friday which we are expecting to be significant," spokeswoman Laura Young said.
