Turkish police fire tear gas, water canons at protesters in Ankara

Turkish police fired on Thursday tear gas and water canons at hundreds of protesters calling for the release of army officers jailed for plotting a coup.

"Freedom to patriots, end conspiracies," the protesters shouted as police prevented them from marching to parliament in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Last month, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was not against the retrial of military officers jailed for attempting to topple his Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The government last week submitted to parliament a bill paving the way for the army officers to be retried.

The appeasing gesture towards the army came as the Prime Minister is facing a major corruption scandal which has involved his entourage ahead of March local elections.

Erdogan has accused associates of an influential movement led by US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen for prompting the corruption probe, and he has sacked thousands of police and prosecutors involved in the investigation.
