Syria issues new visas law for Arabs and foreigners

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad signed on Wednesday a new law regulating the entry of Arabs and foreigners into Syria.

The text, approved by the parliament, stated that any person entering or leaving Syria must have a valid passport or document bearing a visa issued by one of Syria's diplomatic missions or consulates abroad.

The text added that those exempt from the visa requirement are countries with bilateral agreements with Syria, such as Lebanon, and citizens of states with "international treaties" with Damascus, such as Iran.

Before the law was ratified, travelers from all Arab countries, as well as Turkey and Iran, could enter Syria without a visa.

Three years into the uprising against President al-Assad, Syria's regime has lost control of several border crossings, causing damages to neighboring countries.

The new law which will come into force in three months, states that Arabs and other foreigners seeking to enter Syria "must explain their reasons".

Offenders would be liable to between 33,000 to 66,000 US Dollars.
