Iraq papers protest killing of well-known reporter

Iraqi newspapers have not printed Sunday's edition to protest the killing the previous day of a well-known radio journalist by a guard of the country's Kurdish president.

The strike was called for by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate just hours after the death of Radio Free Iraq's Baghdad bureau chief Mohammed Bdaiwi on Saturday.

Police say Bdaiwi was shot in Baghdad by a junior officer at a checkpoint near the president's residence during what they say was a quarrel.

Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council said it's investigating the incident the first involving the ethnically Kurdish security forces, dubbed the peshmerga, who guard Kurdish VIPs in Baghdad.

Hundreds of mourners on Sunday attended the funeral procession of a well-known Iraqi radio journalist killed during a quarrel by the Iraqi president's guard in Baghdad on Saturday.

Bdaiwi's relatives buried his body on Saturday night south of Baghdad.

Sunday's symbolic funeral procession was attended by fellow journalists and residents demanding punishment of the guard.

"We have come here to declare our real stance, that we won't accept anything other than the death penalty for the killer," said the head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, Muaed Allami.

After the shooting, Iraqi security forces besieged the residency compound and the alleged killer was handed over to them, police and state TV said.

The shooting drew condemnation from Iraqi politicians and highlights the resentment many residents of the capital feel towards the often aggressive bodyguards of Iraq's VIPs.
