24 candidates register for Syrian presidential election

The Supreme Constitutional Court announced on Thursday that a total of 24 Syrians have registered to run for the presidential election set to take place next month, including President Bachar al-Assad, as the application deadline expired.

The court will examine the 24 candidates to see if they meet electoral criteria to run for office in Syria's first multi-candidate presidential vote.

A maximum of three candidates are expected to make it to the final list.

"At 3:00 pm (1200 GMT) on Thursday May 1, 2014, the deadline for submitting presidential candidacy ended," court head Adnan Zureiq said.

To run for Syria's presidency, candidates must win approval from at least 35 of parliament's 250 lawmakers, as well as meet criteria including having lived in Syria for the past decade.

The rules ruled out the participation of the country's opposition figures, who are in exile.

Assad, who succeeded his father in office in 2000, is expected to sweep to victory despite the brutal civil war ravaging the country.

More than 150,000 people have been killed in Syria's three-year-old civil war. Some 2.5 million people have fled abroad and 9 million people inside the country need help, including nearly 3.5 million who have no access to essential goods and services.

The conflict has left large territories of Syria beyond the control of the Syrian government, making unclear how it will organize voting nationwide.
