UK police take samples at wasteland being searched for Madeleine McCann evidence

London Metropolitan police on Tuesday manually took samples at a wasteland in Praia da Luz currently being searched in a joint effort between the United Kingdom and Portugal to find more evidence on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Although British officials were not immediately available to explain developments of the operation, Reuters Television images showed members of UK police manually taking samples from the ground which were photographed by a member of Portugal´s Judiciary Police and then taken away.

Earlier in the day the area where the samples were taken had been searched using sniffer dogs which they brought to Portugal from the United Kingdom.

Another portion of the land that remains sealed off by police was cleared using trimming machines from a Portuguese private company.

The operation is taking place just a few blocks away from the apartment from where the little girl disappeared in 2007. British and Portuguese media have reported it could involve ground penetrating radars and excavation machines later in the week.

The current search is the result of a request by Scotland Yard to Portuguese police.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the night of May 3, 2007 as her parents were dinning at a nearby tapas bar.

Her parents were named as official suspects by Portuguese police four months after her disappearance but in 2008 they were cleared and Portugal's public prosecutor later dropped the case, citing lack of evidence.

London police launched a review of the case in 2011 after the couple wrote to British Prime Minister David Cameron saying not enough was being done to find their daughter.

British police said in July last year they had begun their own investigation.
