Saudi Arabia offers $500 million in aid to Iraq
Saudi state media reported on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia pledged $500 million in humanitarian aid for Iraq to be spent through the United Nations to the people in need "regardless of sect or religion."

The United Nations says that 1.2 million Iraqis fled their homes due to violence this year, hundreds of thousands of them following a Sunni militant offensive that has swept up large territories north of Baghdad.

The Sunni Saudi Kingdom has deeply stressed relations with the Iraqi Shiite-led government.

Riyadh has accused Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of creating the appropriate conditions for last month's offensive by marginalizing its Sunni Arab minority.

Maliki in turn has denied such accusations, saying that the oil-rich kingdom is supporting "terrorism" in his Shiite-majority country.
