Several people were injured, four of them critically, when two wagons derailed on Friday (August 1) at the main station at Mannheim after a private freight train rammed an EuroCity express train, confirmed the Mannheim municipal fire-brigade.

"A passenger train was driven into the side and that made two wagons with 110 passengers in them tip over to the left hand side," said Simon Berger from Municipal Fire Brigade Mannheim.

"As the injured go: We have at the moment 4 severely injured people and 18 with minor injuries who are still in hospital. More people with minor cuts or scrapes were immediately seen to at a medical point here at the platform," he added.

No-one died in the accident, according to the authorities. The reason for the accident is still unclear.
