Cairo to host Palestinian-Israeli talks within days -state news

Egypt will host talks between rival Palestinian factions within days, followed by indirect negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the ceasefire in Gaza, the state news agency MENA said on Saturday.

The report quoted an Egyptian official as saying that delegations from Fatah and Hamas would meet on Monday "to complete the Palestinian reconciliation".

The official said Palestinian negotiators would then meet with their Israeli counterparts starting on Wednesday to continue talks on a ceasefire in Gaza which resulted from Egypt-mediated talks in Cairo last month.

Azzam Ahmed, a Fatah official and head of the Palestinian delegation to last month's talks, confirmed the plan for reconciliation talks to begin this week.

He said he expected negotiations with the Israelis to follow those talks, in comments reported by the Palestinian WAFA news agency.

Fifty days of conflict in Gaza between Hamas militants and Israel, which ended in August, has left large parts of the Mediterranean enclave in ruins.

Last month's talks did not involve direct meetings between the negotiators. Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organisation while Hamas refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist. Egyptian officials shuttled between the two sides.
