Bomb explodes in Chile, killing man handling it
A homemade device exploded in Chilean capital Santiago early on Thursday morning, killing a man who appeared to be handling it, city police said.

The man, who has not been identified, died of severe burns after the device exploded in the street in the central Yungay neighborhood, the police said.

The event follows a string of mostly low-level bomb attempts, usually blamed on anarchists, in Chile in recent years.

Earlier this month, 14 people were wounded when a bomb exploded near a metro station, the country's worst such attack since the 1990 return to democracy. Two people have since been arrested and are being held in jail while prosecutors investigate.

The man who died on Thursday "appears to have been manipulating an explosive homemade device, and in that moment, it exploded," said prosecutor Claudio Orellana.

The explosion, which happened at around 0100 local time (0400 GMT), alarmed local residents. Police, who are on high alert after the recent attacks, cordoned off the area as they searched for other possible devices.

Police said the man was between about 20 and 30 years old and was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. It was not clear why he was handling the device.
