WHO: Tuberculosis is still declining in Europe

Health officials say the number of tuberculosis cases in Europe is continuing to decline, dropping 6 percent in 2013 to about 360,000.

Zsuzsanna Jakab, head of the Copenhagen-based World Health Organization's regional office for Europe, says the region nevertheless is the most affected area globally.

Jakab says the number of TB cases has seen "a sustained decline" over the past decade across the region that encompasses 53 member states, about 900 million people and stretches from Greenland in the west to the Pacific shores of Russia in the east.

The latest data, released Tuesday by the WHO Europe and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, said approximately 1,000 people in Europe get tuberculosis each day. High incidence countries include former Soviet republics.
