What are the limits of the "free" social media websites in the Gulf region?

Tweeting is no longer a means of expression, at least in the Gulf where some tweets can lead their writers to the gallows.         

Last February, Saudi authorities detained blogger Hamza Kashgari for insulting the Prophet Muhammad on Twitter.         

The same scenario repeated itself in Kuwait where security forces arrested blogger Hamad al-Naqi late on Tuesday for slandering the Prophet Mohammad and the Islamic faith.          
The news of his arrest shook the Kuwaiti political scene as protestors rallied outside the State Security department calling for the punishment of the 24-year-old blogger by revoking his Kuwaiti nationality.          

On the other hand, other Kuwaitis used Twitter to call for the release of al-Naqi, assuring that his Twitter account was hacked. Following his arrest, al-Naqi denied sending the messages, but according to Kuwaiti websites, he immediately went back on his position.           

Upon al-Naqi’s confession, the National Assembly called for his execution instead of the incarceration stipulated by the Kuwaiti Penal Code. In light of these diverging opinions, it seems that the Arab Spring’s winds bumped into the Gulf’s walls, or maybe this “tweeting” incident was just the echo of the first swallow of spring’s singing.
