Assad caused irreparable damage: Sarkozy

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Wednesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had committed irreparable damage and that France and its partners would do everything possible to end the crisis there.

"The powers in Damascus would be wrong to think they are protected by the people," Sarkozy said in an opening speech to an annual conference of French ambassadors.

"What the Syrian president has committed is irreparable and France and its partners will do everything legally possible to ensure the Syrian people's aspirations for freedom and democracy."
