Morsy: I will preserve the Republican regime and will not neglect my prerogatives

Newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsy pledged on Friday to preserve the Republican regime in Egypt and respect the law and the constitution. He promised not to neglect any of the prerogatives or tasks the people entrusted him with.         

Adressing the Egyptian people in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, Morsy said he will launch a new concept for international relations, warning anyone, whoever it is of undermining Egypt’s dignity. Morsy reassured the people that he will be in contact with everyone and will not discriminate opposition members and regime supporters.        

Morsy said he will not relinquish the martyrs’ blood, adding that throughout his mandate, he will work to maintain a coherent nation and the nation’s higher interests above all else.         

“I am one of you, and I will always stay as such. The revolution is led by its goals, you are the source of power and legitimacy that no authority or institution can surpass”, he said.        

He spoke on the eve of his official swearing-in ceremony that was scheduled in front of a high court. But many protesters called on him to take the oath in the square to defy the ruling generals who took power after Hosni Mubarak's ouster.
