Aleppo, a city unlike any other in Syria

Aleppo entered the cycle of violence after it managed to remain immune from fighting since the beginning of the Syrian revolution nearly a year and a half ago,               

Syria’s economic capital lost its calm demeanor entering the saga of violence in what is now being described as the decisive or even, final act in Syria’s violence.            

Aleppo is considered as Syria’s main economic center, a city known for its craft industry, mainly in the world of textiles.                     

However, in the past few decades, the city’s economic role witnessed many setbacks. The first taking place between 1979 and 1982,  following the siege imposed on it by the state after the Muslim Brotherhood’s uprising.                           

The second setback occurred in 2005 when Turkey and Syria signed the Free Trade Agreement, causing serious economic crisis in the city which houses over 2.5 million people.                   

Aleppo has always been known for its sectarian diversity; Arab Sunnites and Kurds make up 85% of the city’s residents while Christians represent 10% and Alawites 5%.
