Italian FM: Italian guard abducted in Yemen freed

Italy's foreign minister says an Italian embassy guard who was abducted in Yemen's capital has been released.
 
Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said in a statement Thursday that "extraordinary cooperation" by Sanaa authorities helped bring about the rapid release of Alessandro Spadotto. The paramilitary Carabiniere police officer was kidnapped Sunday while walking near the Italian mission.
 
Terzi gave no details about the guard's liberation.
 
Yemen's Interior Ministry on Tuesday had identified the kidnapper as Ali Nasser Jredan from al-Jalal tribe who was detained in January on charges of killing several soldiers in Marib province. He was later released in exchange for a Norwegian U.N. worker who was kidnapped by his tribe.
 
Authorities had said the kidnapper demanded ransom and that his name be removed from a government blacklist.
