Omar Ghalawanji, the new leader of Syria’s caretaker government
Omar Ibrahim Ghalawanji was born in Tartous in 1954. In 1978, he graduated from Syria’s Techrin University with a degree in civil engineering. He ran several military housing organizations between 1978 and 2000.

Ghalawanji occupied the position of Deputy Chairman of Lattakia City Council between 1997 and 2000. He was later appointed director general of the Syrian General Organization for Housing. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee of the Council of Arab Housing Ministers.

He occupied the position of Minister of Housing and Construction in previous governments before serving as Minister of Local Administration in 2011. He served as deputy prime minister until July 6 when he was appointed to lead a caretaker government in the wake of the defection of PM Riyad Hijab.
