Germany charges alleged Lebanese spy
German prosecutors have filed espionage charges against a German-Lebanese dual national whom they accuse of spying on exiled Syrian dissidents for several years.     

The federal prosecutors' office said Friday that the charges against the 48-year-old, identified only as Mahmoud El A. in line with German privacy rules, were filed at a Berlin court on Sept. 25. It wasn't clear when a trial might start.     

Prosecutors allege that the man worked for Syrian intelligence between April 2007 and his arrest in February this year. They say contact between the suspect and his handler intensified at the beginning of 2011 after the Arab Spring revolts started and he reported regularly on Syrian opposition protests in Germany.     

Another suspected Syrian spy arrested along with Mahmoud El A. was charged in July.
