Saleh: I will only quit if my rivals are not in power
President Ali Abdullah Saleh said in an interview published on Friday that he will only step down if key rivals do not assume influential positions. "Because if we transfer power and they are there, this will mean that we have given into a coup," Saleh told The Washington Post.

Saleh has hung on to power in the face of mass protests demanding an end to his 33-year rule. On the other hand Yemeni forces have killed Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born Muslim preacher linked to al Qaeda's Yemen-based wing, the Defense Ministry said on Friday.

"The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions," it said in a statement sent by text message to journalists. Awlaki had been implicated in a botched attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound plane in 2009.
