German Defense Minister in Afghanistan

German Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière arrived on Monday to Afghanistan to demonstrate a strategy on the gradual takeover of power to Afghani officials.

De Maizière, who arrived in Afghanistan at the site of the German contingent in Mzar al-Sharif will later be heading to the capital, Kabul.

Germany has approximately 4800 military troops in Afghanistan, making it the second armed force in NATO, after the United States and Britain.
