Sarkozy welcomes forthcoming release of Shalit
French President Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed on Wednesday the forthcoming release of Franco-Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, describing the move as “great achievement.”

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe also hailed a deal struck between Israel and Gaza's Hamas Islamist rulers to swap more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for Israeli captive soldier Gilad Shalit, resolving one of the most emotive and intractable issues between them.

"This is a fabulous piece of news," Juppe told France.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won overwhelming cabinet approval for the swap at a special night-time session; He had been under constant public pressure to bring Shalit home.

But some ministers opposed the agreement, warning it would encourage the Palestinians to abduct more soldiers.
