Italy's newly re-elected President Giorgio Napolitano called on divided political parties on Saturday to act responsibly in the days ahead as he tries once more to resolve the stalemate created by February's deadlocked election.                     

"I strongly hope that in the next few weeks, starting in the next few days, all sides will fulfill their duties, with the aim of strengthening the institutions of the state," he said in a brief address at his offices in the Quirinale Palace.                

"We must all consider, as I have tried to in these hours, the difficult situation of the country and the problems of Italy and the Italians, as well as the image and international role of our country," he said.

Earlier, following a heavily polarized Parliament which was unable to agree on a new president for Italy, 87-year-old President Giorgio Napolitano has agreed to pleading from political leaders to be a candidate for a second term and quickly end an impasse which has thwarted efforts to form a government in the recession-mired country.                  

Napolitano, citing his advanced age, had repeatedly refused to be a candidate for a second seven-year term. But he said in a statement after lobbying from the leaders "cannot help but take on the responsibility toward the nation." Whether he will win in the latest round of balloting set for later Saturday in Parliament will depend on whether political leaders can persuade their squabbling parties to close ranks behind the decision to back Napolitano.
