The Kurdistan Workers Party kick-starts withdrawal from Turkey

Kurdish rebels began on Wednesday withdrawing from Turkey into Iraq in a bid to end a conflict that caused the death of thousands of people.

The withdrawal came following talks between Turkish authorities and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

About 2,000 rebel fighters are expected to leave Turkey on foot to reach their safe havens in the Qandil mountains in Iraq.

Media outlets reported that the withdrawals are expected to take up to four months and that the rebels have been withdrawing for weeks now, adding that May 8 is just a "symbolic" date of withdrawal.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party has been fighting Turkey for autonomy for Kurds in southeastern Turkey for almost three decades.
