Vast crowds of pilgrims climb the ascent of Arafat
Vast crowds of pilgrims began Saturday morning to ascend the Mountain of Mercy at Arafat, 12 miles outside Mecca, where Islam's Prophet Muhammad is said to have delivered his farewell sermon.

The ascent of Arafat is the first event associated with the five-day hajj. Saudi authorities say that an estimated 2.5 million pilgrims are expected to participate.

Saudi Interior Ministry Maj. Gen. Mansour Al Turki said that the pilgrimage is going according to plan, AFP reported.

Al Turki added that security forces will not allow irregular cars to pass by and will separate pedestrians from vehicles to avoid traffic. More than 100,000 troops were deployed to guarantee the security and safety of the pilgrims.

Wearing white robes to symbolize purity and equality under God, millions of Muslims began climbing the rocky desert hill outside Mecca.
