Pope decries violence in Nigeria

Pope Benedict XVI says he is praying for the victims of attacks in Nigeria that left at least 69 people dead and he is appealing for the end of violence.

Benedict told tourists Sunday in St. Peter's Square that he is following with apprehension the news from Nigeria. A radical Muslim sect has claimed responsibility for the attacks in northeastern Nigeria. The sect wants to implement strict Sharia law across Nigeria, the south of which is predominantly Christian and the north mainly Muslim.

The pope called for the end of all violence, saying it only increases problems, sowing hatred and division even among the faithful.
