REPORT: Turkish PM Erdogan to meet Istanbul protest organizers on Wed

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will on Wednesday meet leaders of the Gezi Park platform, the group whose protests against the destruction of an Istanbul park have spiraled into a wave of anti-government protests that have rocked Turkey.

"They asked to meet the prime minister and he agreed to meet with the organizers," Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told reporters on Monday, saying that the aim would be to try to halt the protests.

Earlier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a series of increasingly belligerent speeches to cheering supporters that those who do not respect the government will pay.

He said his patience was running out with the protesters, who have occupied Istanbul's main Taksim Square for more than a week and have held hundreds of demonstrations in dozens of cities across the country.

Raising the stakes for those opposing him on Turkish streets and squares, Erdogan said he plans to bring out his supporters for rallies in Ankara and Istanbul next weekend.

But opposition voices could be heard in Istanbul on Monday morning.

Erdogan made the most inflammatory of his speeches on Sunday as he arrived in the capital, Ankara. He belittled the protesters, again calling them "capulcu" - meaning "looters" or "vandals" - but protesters have turned it into a humorous retort, printing stickers with the word, scrawling it on their tents and uploading music videos onto social networking sites.
