Sabah: The Brightest Mourning

Even in death, she refused sadness, but instead requested that her funeral be "celebrated publicly," as quoted by her niece on Wednesday.

Sabah, Arabic for morning, requested that her mourning be as bright as the sun, devoid of the color black.

One of Lebanon's last remaining pillars of music, the 87-year-old diva had hundreds of musical and theatrical achievements under her belt, like being the first Arab singer to perform at the prestigious Olympia theater in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Piccadilly Theater in London and Sydney's Opera House.

And while she may have been the bout of several jokes throughout her old age, none could ever fill her place on the Lebanese or Arab music scene.

Frivolous, flirtatious and openly candid in her demeanor, the peroxide blonde will always be remembered for her contributions to music, culture and cinema.

To us, she represents an era that our generation will sadly never know; the golden age of Lebanon.

May she rest in peace, our now free singing bird.
