Support Local Talent...Support Beirut Artparasites

"We live in a country where most "artists" are looked upon as "academic under achievers", because we live in a society that condescends anyone who isn't a Doctor, a lawyer, or a minister..."

This is what Rayane Serhan, founder and curator of Beirut-artparasites stated at the beginning of our long conversation. And isn't she just right?

How many talents remained unnoticed in this country i sometimes like to call "the graveyard of ambitions". A sad reality we all had to face one way or another.

Yet Rayane refuses to give up and Beirut-artparasites, inspired by the renowned Facebook page Berlin-artparasites, is nothing but the result of courage and determination. As a fan of art in all its forms, she decided to created a platform where artists from all ages and walks of life, can share their works freely.

At first i couldn't understand why someone would go through all that trouble while getting absolutely nothing in return, but Serhan was generous enough to explain the following : "I want to encourage the teenager with a passion for drawing, to have an opportunity to follow a dream and do something they love, rather than something their society and family wants them to do, because "it pays more". I want the CEO of a company to bring out the after-hours artist in him and show the world what he's really made of, without his suit. I want the girl with the broken heart to send me a poem of how that guy broke her to pieces, and how she survived."

Rayane is now thinking on a bigger scale, and in an effort to fully support local talent she is organizing an event where all artists can display their work... for Free! Yep. You heard right. The event relies totally on donations and crowdfunding when it comes to venue, lighting, sound etc...

Isn't that just wonderful?! I can't even remember the last time someone offered me a chance like this. To really display my work and mingle with different artists without asking for anything in return. I personally think this is worth a shot.
