Egypt: Submarine sinks; 3 German tourists drown

An Egyptian security official says three German tourists have drowned after their sightseeing submarine sank off the coast of a popular Red Sea resort.

The official says the sub sank with the three Germans, a couple and their child on board Thursday near the city of Hurghada. He says the 13 other tourists on board were rescued.
It was not immediately clear what caused the submarine to sink.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press.

Submarine excursions that allow tourists to gaze at the Red Sea's famous coral reefs and tropical fish from the sub's windows are popular with tourists visiting Egypt.
