Turkish military mission in Syria meant to counter possible attack -presidency

A Turkish military operation to rescue 38 soldiers guarding a tomb in Syria surrounded by Islamic State militants was launched to counter a possible attack on them, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Monday.

The Syrian government described the operation as an act of "flagrant aggression", a response dismissed by Kalin, who said the Syrian authorities had lost all legitimacy.

Kalin also said Turkey was working intensively with the British authorities to trace three London schoolgirls who traveled to Turkey last week and are believed to be making their way to Syria.

"Turkey will make its planned new long-range missile system harmonious with the NATO system," presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told a news conference on Monday in comments apparently at odds with those of the country's defense minister.

Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said last Thursday Ankara did not plan to integrate the new defense system with NATO infrastructure. Officials at the time said a $3.4 billion deal with China was still under consideration.

NATO member Turkey chose China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp as a preferred bidder in 2013, prompting U.S. and Western concern about security and the compatibility of the weaponry with NATO systems.
