REPORT: Siniora from The Hague: Some sought to link Lebanon to Syrian regime
Fouad Siniora, a former Lebanese Prime Minister and the head of the Future bloc, has begun testifying before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, recounting the political context prior to the assassination of his close friend, late former PM Rafik Hariri.

Siniora focused on the ties between former premier Hariri and the Syrian regime during the 1990s and early 2000s.

“Hariri's ties with late Syrian President Hafez Assad differed to those with [incumbent] President Bashar Assad,” Siniora said before the trial chamber at The Hague on Monday.

He spoke of the “strong grip” the Syrian security apparatuses had on the Lebanese government back at the time, saying “nothing could have been done without the regime's approval.”

Siniora gave an example of how he sought the nomination of current MP Ghazi Youssef as parliament speaker, but the regime rejected his move.

“The Syrian regime also opposed Youssef's nomination in the 2000 parliamentary elections and wanted Hariri to put Hezbollah candidate Mohammed al-Berjawi on his list,” the Future bloc head said.

He also noted that “Syria wielded its influence in how Hariri formed his government in 1997,” adding “it sought to impose three ministers of its choice on the premier, but Hariri opposed the names.”

“He held a long meeting with Hafez Assad to explain to him that the political and security situations were not suitable, at the time, for the appointment of those figures,” said Siniora.

He added that Hariri sought his appointment along with Bahij Tabbara and Samir al-Jisr instead.

“Efforts were being exerted to link Lebanon to Syria through the Syrian security apparatus and its Lebanese allies,” Siniora concluded.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese PM Hariri and 21 others were killed.
