Obama extends Libya sanctions for another year

The White House announced on Friday that U.S. President Barack Obama said on Friday that the sanctions imposed by his administration on Libya last year will be extended for another year.

Obama informed the Congress on Thursday that, given the ongoing threats posed to U.S. interests by the family of Libya's slain dictator Muammar Gaddafi, the national emergency order allowing sanctions against Libya will continue.

“The situation in Libya continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” Obama said in a letter to congressional leaders.
