On Thursday, an explosion targeted a meeting of Qalamoun Scholars Committee in Arsal’s al-Sabil neighborhood, leaving several killed and injured.
The head of the committee Sheikh Othman Mansour survived the explosion but is in a critical condition.
The Qalamoun Scholars Committee is known to play a major role in the negotiations conducted to free the abducted soldiers.
The troops were kidnapped by the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Nusra Front and Islamic State militants in the wake of clashes in the border town in August 2014.
