REPORT: 13th round of talks held to pave way for government reactivation

The 13th round of talks kicked off Monday in Ain al-Tineh, in the absence of head of Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun and Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Frangieh.

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil represented Aoun during the meeting, while former Minister Youssef Saadeh represented Frangieh.

During the session, an intense debate occurred between the conferees over the latest stances and accusations exchanged between Hezbollah and Future Movement, as well as over the Lebanon’s stance launched by Foreign Minister Bassil during Arab foreign ministers meeting.

Positions:

When leaving the session, head of Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt said that “they understand Minister Bassil’s stance during Arab foreign ministers meeting on Sunday, stressing the need to continue the dialogue.

For his part, head of the Democratic Party Talal Erslan noted that discussions included the reactivation of the governmental work, mainly the cabinet session scheduled for next Thursday.

Both Jumblatt and Erslan left the session before its end.

Following the meeting, Deputy Speaker Farid Makary said that head of the Future bloc Fouad Siniora expressed his objection over “certain expressions that could have been drafted in a better way in Minister Bassil’s speech.”

For his part, Tourism Minister Michel Faraon pointed out that he proposed holding a session dedicated to distancing Lebanon from the regional tensions, hoping that it will fasten the election of a new president.
