French President Francois Hollande warned Thursday against Lebanon’s presidential vacuum, stressing the need to elect a new president as soon as possible.
Lebanon has been without a head of state since the term of former President Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.
On another note, Hollande said that Iran's return to the international scene was "now possible" after a nuclear deal saw sanctions lifted against the country.
"It depends only on this great country to succeed," Hollande said just days ahead of a visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Paris.
Separately, he pointed out that the Arab and Kurdish forces, who are fighting the Islamic State, will receive more support in order to retake the territories that are occupied by the extremist group in Syria and Iraq.
Hollande concluded by saying that any political negotiation to end the Syrian crisis requires clarifications in terms of who will rule the country in the future.
