Dechasa’s suicidal case prompts Lebanon’s Public Prosecution to take action

The suicide of foreign domestic workers has almost become a daily news in Lebanon. However, the case witnessed a new development after the Public Prosecution decided for the first time to take action with regards to the case of Alem Dechasa’s suicide.

The accused will be tried in accordance with the felony he perpetrated and will be sentenced to 1-3 years in prison.

However, this unprecedented legal achievement did not satisfy Lebanese activists who consider that the way to a law ensuring the right of these workers is still too long.

Dechasa’s story is similar to hundreds of stories whose details are still trapped between the walls of Lebanese houses.

Among these stories is that of the Nepalese Leila Achraya who had barely spent two months in Lebanon before returning to her mother country in a wooden box after she was tortured and raped by her Lebanese employer.
