Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea stressed Saturday that the LF had exerted huge efforts in terms of the Taef Accord in a bid to reach a true Lebanese state, pointing out that “the Syrian regime was attempting to take control of the country and none of the officials took the initiative to confront the Syrians.”
Geagea spoke following a mass that was celebrated at his residence in Maarab on the 22nd anniversary of the Our Lady of Deliverance Church bombing.
“The Lebanese-Syrian security regime committed the crime of bombing the Our Lady of Deliverance Church,” he stated.
He added that Lebanon’s decision-making on strategic affairs is “confiscated” by the “remnants” of the Syrian regime.
Geagea was referring to several cases, chief among them was that of former Information Minister Michel Samaha who committed a big crime against the country and even though there were visual and audio proofs, he was released.
In 1994, Geagea was arrested and served a prison sentence for allegedly masterminding the deadly bombing of the above mentioned church in Zouk Mikael.
He was also sentenced to life imprisonment for his alleged involvement in assassinations during the Civil War.
However, he was released in 2005 when parliament passed an amnesty law after the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.
