Hariri urges Frangieh to attend Wednesday’s parliamentary session
Future Movement leader Saad Hariri urged on Tuesday Marada leader MP Sleiman Frangieh to attend Wednesday’s parliament session tasked to elect a new president.
Hariri’s comments were made following his meeting with Prime Minister Tammam Salam at the Grand Serail.
“All lawmakers must attend tomorrow's session to elect a new president and their constitutional duty is to attend and not to boycott the sessions,” Hariri noted.
Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of president Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 and Hariri launched late in 2015 a proposal to nominate Marada Movement chief MP Sleiman Franjieh for the presidency.
Hariri's initiative was rejected by the country's main Christian parties and Hezbollah, and Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, the ex-PM's ally in the March 14 camp, has recently nominated Change and Reform bloc chief MP Michel Aoun for the presidency in an apparent response to Hariri's move.
On another note, Hariri also said that he tackled with Salam the waste management crisis, adding that a solution must be found for the ongoing crisis.
