Maronite bishops call for the swift election of a new president
The council of Maronite Bishops held on Wednesday its monthly meeting in Bkerke under the chairmanship of Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai, to tackle national and pastoral affairs.
Following the meeting, the council said that the “recent escalation in rhetoric of the Lebanese officials reflects the divisions that are affecting the state.”
The council urged the officials to keep the Lebanese army and the security forces away from the political disputes.
The bishops also called for the swift election of a new president for the country, urging the officials to shoulder their national responsibility and to put the country’s interests above all.
Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of president Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.
Deep disputes between rival political parties have thwarted the elections.
