Patriarch Rai breaks silence over Father Labaki’s case
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai broke the silence over the case of Father Mansour Labaki, noting that he was subject to “a defamation campaign.”
Rai noted that he referred the case of Father Labaki to Pope Francis.
“In my last meeting with Pope Francis, I referred to his Holiness the file of Father Labaki, and said that disputes started when he established a rest house in France’s Lourdes,” Rai added.
He also noted that excommunication was recently lifted on Labaki, adding however that he is still banned from partaking in public masses and ceremonies.
In October 2013, French Magazine La Croix reported that Maronite Father Mansour Labaki was charged by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith with sexually abusing three minors.
The priest was sentenced to a “life of penitence,” after the Vatican office charged Labaki with the sexual offenses on June 19.
Labaki (74) was also banned from exercising his ecclesiastical duties and participating in media and public appearances.
