Berri asks al-Sisi to deploy efforts to reactivate Saudi grant to army
Speaker Nabih Berri met on Tuesday in Egypt with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of his participation in the 23rd conference of the Arab Inter-parliamentary Union.
During the meeting, Berri praised “Egypt's pan-Arab positions,” urging the Egyptian president to deploy his utmost efforts to provide military support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, including efforts to reactivate the Saudi grant to the army.
Saudi Arabia has suspended a $4 billion aid grant for the Lebanese army and security forces following a political confrontation with the region's Shiite power Iran and its ally Hezbollah.
For his part, Sisi voiced his support for Lebanon and the Lebanese people, stressing that “Egypt does not differentiate between one Lebanese party and another.”
The Egyptian president also emphasized the need to elect a president in Lebanon.
Berri also held talks with the head of the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II whereby he stressed the importance of the Arab-Arab dialogue and the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia and its positive impacts on the entire region, including Lebanon.
