Rifi, Bishop Aoude discuss results of Tripoli’s municipal polls
Resigned Minister of Justice Achraf Rifi visited on Tuesday Beirut Metropolite of Greek Orthodox Bishop Elias Aoude.

Talks reportedly featured high over the results of the municipal elections in the northern city of Tripoli and the absence of Christians and Alawites in the municipal council of the city.

During the meeting, Rifi noted that Tripoli “is keen on the presence of a true Muslim-Christian partnership and a Sunnite-Alawite one also.

“We will consider the candidates who did not win as our partners in this journey,” he added.

Last week, Tripoli MP Robert Fadel announced his resignation from parliament, protesting the surprising results of the municipal elections in the northern city in which no Christian candidates managed to win seats on the municipal council.

Similarly, a political official of the Jamaa al-Islamiya in Tripoli and the North Ihab Nafeh submitted also last week his resignation.

"The results of the municipal elections in Tripoli and the North have proven that our choice was not right. Consequently, I have submitted my resignation," Nafeh said in a statement.
