Speaker Nabih Berri warned Wednesday saying that “the act of not reaching an agreement over a new electoral law and holding on to the 1960 electoral law, which does live up to people’s expectations means sparking their outrage and igniting their anger to a point, where the Lebanese people would take it down to streets”.
During Wednesday’s gathering, Berri stressed that parliamentary elections should be held, refusing an option consisting in extending the mandate of the current parliament.
On the illegal internet dossier, Berri stated that “the Media and Telecommunications Committee will follow up on the case until the very end,” pointing out that if they continue taking it at such a slow pace he will call for a session for the formation of a parliamentary committee to settle down this matter.
“I will not allow any covering up to take place or any obliteration of facts,” emphasizing that all those involved should be held accountable.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker Farid Makari had met with Berri where they discussed the issues facing the drafting of the new electoral law during the sessions held to negotiate it.
Makari said that he proposed solutions for some of the points they disagreed upon, considering the hybrid electoral law to be the only solution to get all parties together.
