REPORT: Eiffel Tower fan zone fills up ahead of Euro 2016
Football fans flocked to the Eiffel Tower on Thursday (June 9) as the fan zone opened up to the public for the first time, one day before the Euro 2016 soccer tournament kicks off.
 
Up to 100,000 people are expected to head to the Eiffel Tower on match days, with other giant TV screens placed in cities across France.
 
About 2.5 million spectators are expected to watch 51 football matches involving 24 teams in games played at 10 stadiums when the European Championship begins on Friday (June 10).
 
Paris' police chief said on Monday (June 6) he would be receiving thousands of reinforcements ahead of the tournament and that his force was as prepared as it could be to face the risk of a militant attack in the French capital.
 
France is in a state of emergency after militants killed 130 people in a series of coordinated assaults across Paris in November. The French, United States and other governments have warned that militants may target the tournament.
 
Nation-wide, more than 90,000 police, soldiers and private security agents will be deployed to ensure the safety of the June 10- July 10 tournament.
 
Islamic State militants have threatened a campaign of bomb attacks on large crowds in France, the head of the General Directorate for Internal Security's (DGSI) intelligence said on May 19.
 
Security experts and police officials have said protecting those areas will be the biggest challenge due to a lack of resources.
