REPORT: Syrians celebrate defeat of Islamic State in Manbij, recounting horrors
The people of Manjib, near the Turkish border with Syria were jubilant on Saturday (August 13) a day after Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) ousted Islamic State forces from the city.

Sharfan Darwish of the SDF allied Manbij Military Council told Reuters they had freed over 2,000 civilian hostages who had been held by the militants.

Some locals recounted the horrors of IS rule, showing journalists areas dedicated to corporal punishment. One unidentified man can be seen pointing to an area referred to as the 'Ship Circle' reserved for executions.

"Here, they used to execute people and hung their heads here and leave it for three days...This is the Ship Circle and at each circle they put a cross. For anything or using the excuse he did not believe, they put him and cut his head. They execute people here and kill them and it is all execution. It is all injustice, injustice, injustice until the day of injustice. They are not related to religion and we all lived with Islam and they came to teach US Islam!" he said.

In the footage, women can be seen dazed and confused but most of all ecstatic at being released.

"Thank God. We are happy, my brother. We are happy thank God. Thank God we got rid of Mohammad (an IS member). May God hold them to account!" said one unidentified woman.

Another unidentified woman added, "My house is like a palace and I left it as they wanted to take us by force and since the morning we did not feel anything. Why? Because we wanted to leave. I came with no shoes my daughter and I. We did not bring anything and we do not want anything."

On Friday (August 12) a young unidentified man spotted celebrating in the streets talked of losing his hand for a crime Islamic State insisted he had committed.
"I feel happiness and thanks be to God"

The SDF, with heavy air support from a U.S.-led coalition, said last week they had taken almost complete control of Manbij, where a small number of IS fighters had been holed up.

U.S. officials who backed the initiative have said once the Manbij operation is completed, it would create the conditions to move on the militant group's de facto capital of Raqqa. U.S. officials anticipate a tough battle.
