The municipality of the Hermel town of Wadi al-Ouyoun received three years ago an amount of USD 4.3 million as a grant from the European Union to establish a sewage treatment plant, in order to resolve a crisis that exists in every Lebanese town. The plant was initially planned to be built away from the residential and touristic areas so that it does not affect al-Assi River.
But to the residents’ surprise, the municipality issued a recent decision to build the plant in the area where the people collect water. The decision triggered a wide objection from the residents who said that this plan will destroy all agricultural activities and touristic life in the village.
